The Debt
It was midnight.
No one on their right mind would be out this late at night, not on this city, not on this street.
And yet here we are, three people walking in this park that is barely illuminated and at the side of the prostitution street. A spot for innocence in the middle of a corrupted city.
I look at the girl walking in front of me, she is so short, almost like a little kid, she walks with enthusiasm towards the swings giggling while looking back at me with a huge grin on her face.
I look at my right side and see the man walking by my side, he has a grin on his face as well.
He walks towards the little girl and starts pushing her on the swing, I go to the swing next to them and sit. He lets her go and starts pushing me so I can swing. I smile and feel his hands on the swing, I close my eyes as I feel every push.
We laugh, we swinging, it feels like if we were children again, like this is our playground.
Space for innocence in the middle of a city that has lost its innocence ...
I start swinging with more enthusiasm, when I hear it, my swing is making a sound. Cling. Cling.
Maria ...
It was a low whisper, only meant for me to hear it. I open my eyes and I see him, he is far away hiding on the trees around the park.
He is staring at me, I shiver and look away. I look at my friends and they are still happy, they haven't noticed him, perhaps we have a few more minutes of fun before they notice, but it is too late, I hear her gasping and his question.
I jump out of the swing and walk calmly to where he is hiding, he looks at me with his pitch black eyes and says my name again, I feel like all my confidence has evaporated as I see him move towards me.
You owe me a life, Maria.
He is right, I owe him a life.
I look up at him and nod. I turn around and walk towards my friends, say goodbye is the least they deserve.
They stare at me with confusion and panic, especially him ... he tells me he loves me, that he can't lose me again, that he will do anything for me, that he would sacrifice his life for me.
I smile and hug him.
And you will, I whisper in his ear.
Just as he said, it was immediate, I feel his body growing heavier until I can't hold him any longer and he drops to the floor with an empty look on his face.
She screams, but I don't listen to her anymore, I turn to look at him, he nods at me and goes.
My debt is now settled.
